Attention JIS Parents/Guardians! The following changes are being made at JIS with the current expectations that align with public health orders and guidance from CDE/CDPHE: For students that are 10-years-old or younger, face masks are optional. If their parents want them to wear a face mask, they are welcome to wear a face mask. Students will have desks closer together, maintaining a 3 foot distance. We will begin to mix cohorts for instructional purposes, with groupings for Reading and Math across the grade level. All students will be eating in the lunchroom as a grade level seated 3 ft. apart. We still need to wear masks and be socially distanced by 3 ft. when we are in the hallways; as well as when lined up for arrival, lunch, and dismissal. Recess will remain with students assigned to an area, remaining in their cohort for now.

Phew-ee!! It smells like something died in here! And it did! Upon our return from Spring Break, custodians were repulsed by a nauseating odor when they opened the door of one of the modulars at Washington Primary School - the Music Box. While we have battled the occasional mouse for years, it was obvious this was not the current case. After a thorough investigation it was determined the offense was emanating from the crawlspace. An access point was discovered close to a pipe that runs through the siding and under the building where animals had chewed through the paneling increasing the size of the opening. A number of panels were removed, hoping it would be sufficient to identify and remove the culprit and provide additional ventilation to help with the odors. There was no visible carcass but the insulation had been disturbed in a number of places. Our local pest-control providers were unable to access and identify the problem. We did reach out to a company in Colorado Springs that has the expertise to determine and fix our problem. What we know at this point is that the crawlspace of the Music Box at Washington Primary School has become home to a plethora of critters. Some have made a nest in the insulation. The hypothesis is that the yet-to-be-determined animal has burrowed its way into or through the insulation and became trapped. It is from this investigation, we too have learned the depth of infestation that has besieged the modular. Sadly, this is just another symptom of aging school facilities. The removal of the animal and replacement of the insulation is estimated to be approximately $2,500. We will need to add some metal screening to the base when replaced in order to prevent a recurrence. That cost is still to be determined. Parents, please be very cautious and observant that small children do not enter this area. Panels as those that appear in the photo have been removed on both the parking-lot and playground sides of the modular. The repair is scheduled for Saturday, March 27.

Can you believe Washington Primary students have been in school for 100 days! (It's actually just a few more than that!!) WPS will be celebrating the end of Read Across American and Dr. Seuss' birthday (which was actually Tuesday -3/2) with the reading of "I'll Teach My Dog 100 Words" and other 100th day activities. Check those notes, parents! This story, another great addition to the Dr. Seuss story clubs, was written by Michael Frith. Mr. Frith was a close personal friend of Dr. Seuss and his book editor! He is known for his many illustrations with the Sesame Street books and was the creative director of The Jim Henson Company - the Muppets! The illustrator, P.D. (Philip Dey) Eastman, was also a good friend of Theodor Geisel (aka: Dr. Seuss). They served together in the Army. Mr. Eastman illustrated many of Dr. Seuss' books and Dr. Seuss penned many books under P.D. Eastman's name. Friendships are good things.

Tuesday ~ Put Me In the Zoo WPS Students ~ Wear polka dots and/ or stripes! “Put me in the Zoo” is a book by Robert Lopshire. Mr. Lopshire was an art consultant who worked closely with Dr. Seuss on many of his books. He went on to write 31 of his own stories and captured the style of Seuss' writings and illustrations in many of those books, thus being included in the Dr. Seuss reading clubs.
